Yango ride-hailing service introduces innovative mode, alerting Muslim drivers to prayer times

The new in-app features aim to harmonise schedules with religious practices, making Yango ride-hailing
service to cater specifically to the needs of Muslim drivers in several countries, including the UAE

Dubai, UAE, 01 April 2024: International ride-hailing service Yango, part of global technology company
Yango, has rolled out a new feature within its driver app designed to help drivers adhere to their prayer
schedules throughout the year, while also distributing Iftar boxes to them to break their fast-during
Ramadan. The feature is now available to all partners’ drivers in the UAE, Morocco, and a few more
countries, highlighting Yango commitment to transform global technologies into everyday services
    tailored for local communities.
Launching during the holy month of Ramadan, the new mode allows drivers to seamlessly integrate their
daily schedule with their religious duties. Yango leverages cutting-edge technology, informed by
extensive research on verified open resources, alongside bespoke algorithms fine-tuned through
engagement with local communities across several countries to ensure precision. Innovative mapping
and smart routing technologies enable drivers to identify and navigate to the nearest mosque with ease
directly within the app, even in an unfamiliar location.
By activating this feature in the app settings, drivers receive a 15-minute reminder before each prayer
time and automatic muting of any app notifications at the start of prayer times. The ability to pause
order notifications ensures that they don’t miss any potential rides, which are then assigned to other
nearby drivers. The feature also points to the direction of the Qibla and displays the prayer schedule for
the upcoming two days. Drivers have the flexibility to set the prayer time calculation according to their
    preferred Islamic convention.
Islam Abdul Karim, General Manager, Yango GCC, stated: The introduction of the new mode for
drivers, permanent beyond the Ramadan period, is a step forward in our ongoing effort to create a more
inclusive and supportive environment for partners’ drivers. It enriches their work-life balance, blending
advanced technology with local customs and practices. We are keen to not only enhance their daily
experience but also set standards for cultural consideration within the tech industry. The ride-hailing service will continue to gather feedback to refine and improve its functionality. With the new mode feature, Yango aims to support the spiritual needs of its partners’ drivers by integrating world-leading technology with local traditions. The feature will soon be available for partner couriers as well.
As a token of appreciation for the dedication and hard work of partners and their drivers during Ramadan, Yango ride-hailing service has set up a dedicated zone near its centre to distribute special Iftar boxes. • World Water Day: NCM’s Efforts in Advancing Water Security

World Water Day: NCM’s Efforts in Advancing Water Security

World Water Day: NCM’s Efforts in Advancing Water Security

By Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) and
President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

Reliable water resources are a matter of societal, agricultural, and national security. As the world faces high water stress, there is an increasing imperative for countries to strengthen their water resilience and promote new research, technology, efficient resource conservation and effective international partnerships.

As we commemorate World Water Day, we are witnessing a palpable surge in global interest towards effective water resource management, as countries begin to embrace how effective water resource management enables reliable irrigation, access to clean drinking water, local water sources, management of natural disasters, and hydroelectricity. The international community is eagerly looking for new ways to efficiently allocate and use water in a manner that is sustainable, equitable, and beneficial for both human beings and the environment. While solutions such as desalination and greywater recyling are viable options, communities need tangible solutions to increase rain and groundwater recharge.

In this era of climate change, where water scarcity threatens millions, innovative solutions like rain enhancement technology have emerged as a driving force. The National Center of Meteorology (NCM), through the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP), continues to stand at the forefront of this movement, dedicated to pioneering rain enhancement research as a sustainable solution for water security.

Rain enhancement technology, also known as cloud seeding, offers water security through harnessing precipitation processes to augment rainfall in regions facing water scarcity. Rain enhancement technology capitalizes on the natural cycle of water vapor condensation and cloud formation, resutling in an environmentally safe, adaptive and uniquely cost-effective option to address water security challenges. As an arid region committed to pioneering water solutions, the UAE has embraced rain enhancement technology while finding resourceful ways to highlight the importance of fresh water.

Recently, the UAE announced the visionary Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, designed to confront the urgent challenge of water scarcity, enhance awareness, accelerate technological innovation, and expand the scope of international cooperation. Following this launch, UAEREP has extended its reach in the global rain enhancement field by engaging in international conferences and continuing its goals in seeking innovative scientific research projects.

The UAEs commitment to spearheading global efforts in achieving water security is resolute, epitomized by the Mohammed bin Zayed Water Initiative, as well as the dedication to rain enhancement research embodied by UAEREP. Under these banners, the nation has embraced a proactive stance, channeling resources and expertise towards eco-friendly solutions that promise long-term sustainability.

The UAE has come a long way in rain enhancement since its first official operations in the 1990s. We now have more than 60 networked weather stations, an integrated radar network, and five specialized aircraft for seeding operations. Since its initiation in 2015, UAEREP, a cornerstone of the UAEs water security strategy, continues to evolve, adapting to the changing landscape of scientific innovation and environmental challenges. With each passing year, the program strengthens its resolve, discovering and funding cutting-edge research projects and fostering international collaborations to push the boundaries of rain enhancement science.

Since the first cycle, UAEREP has funded 14 unique rain enhancement projects, resulting in collaborations in over 85 countries and over $22.5 million of rain enhancement investments. We have additionally acquired eight patents, while our funded projects have been highlighted in prestigious research journals.

UAEREP is keen to establish scientifically validated technology platforms and verification techniques that enhance rainfall and water security in arid and semi-arid regions across the world. We have continually raised our technology readiness levels in distinctive areas such as optimizing seeding materials, autonomous technology, geo-engineering, and nanotechnology, as well as advanced models, software and data. These specialized focus areas act as a roadmap towards refining the strategic elements that will bolster rain enhancement operations in our region and beyond.

This past month, UAEREP proudly participated in the prestigious Baku Water Week conference, underscoring its commitment to global dialogue and cooperation in tackling water challenges. This platform provided an invaluable opportunity to exchange knowledge, share insights, and participate on panel discussions aimed at advancing rain enhancement technologies on a global scale. UAEREP additionally met with many key stakeholders throughout the week, forging partnerships that will contribute to significant progress in combatting water scarcity, especially as we look ahead to COP29 in Azerbaijan.

As we reflect on the significance of World Water Day, its imperative to acknowledge and appreciate everyone contributing to the quest for water security. At NCM, we realize that finding such innovative solutions to this global challenge is no easy task, and all the collaborators, scientists, researchers, and meteorological experts deserve our heartfelt appreciation for their unwavering commitment and dedication. Together, we are not just addressing the challenges of today; we are shaping a more resilient and water-secure future for generations to come.(Ends)

So, while we rightly celebrate the winners and their projects, let us remember that this spirit of innovation and collaboration must continue beyond a mere competition, as we work to implement the ideas that will safeguard our planet for generations to come.”

Evaluation of the finalists’ projects was conducted by a high-level panel of judges whose expertise and assessment ensured international standards of independent judging criteria were applied in the selection of the winners.

As part of a series of five workshop sessions to help participants fine tune their pitches and generate ideas suitable for the overarching theme of this year’s Ideation, several experts provided guidance to the finalist teams. They were Dr. Chris Millora, Assistant Professor in Education at Goldsmiths, University of London; Dr. Luis Felipe Ruiz Espindola, Director of International Affairs, International Circle of Technical Helpers (CINAT); Clodagh Byrne, Global Resilience Lead, VSO International; Marwa Abraham, Vice-President and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, First Abu Dhabi Bank; Chad Wellman, Chief Financial Officer, General Motors Africa and Middle East; and Marc Ebolo, Director of Sales, General Motors Middle East.

Commenting on the importance of this competition and the contributions of the participants, Nichole Cirillo, Executive Director of International Association for Volunteer Effort, said: “Governments and institutions around the world are recognizing that we will not achieve the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals without the investment, innovation, and commitment of volunteers. We’re proud to be a partner in this Ideathon to spur creative solutions and highlight the impact that a billion volunteers are making in communities across the globe. With our broad, global reach IAVE was also proud to have mobilized many of our members and affiliated organizations to enter this exciting event.”

Chad Wellman, Chief Financial Officer at General Motors Africa and Middle East added: “We are delighted to be working with Emirates Foundation on its far-reaching efforts to inspire innovative solutions to today’s pressing issues. At General Motors, we are working towards making the future of mobility a reality: one with zero crashes, emissions, and congestion, all of which go hand in hand with global efforts to create increasingly sustainable urban and rural lifestyles. The Ideathon’s open call for impactful proposals has far surpassed expectations, and we are keen to take forward our collaborative approach towards growing green economies and protecting resources. We will continue to support fresh thinking from a range of nationalities, capabilities, and age brackets that will help bring to life our aligned vision for a greener, more inclusive future.”— ENDS —
