Over the past years, we have been dedicated to providing support and funding for a diverse range of innovative technologies, and we are confident that the newly selected projects will build upon this legacy, introducing novel innovations to advance the field of rain enhancement science research.”

In every award cycle, the program offers grants of up to US$1.5 Million distributed over three years to each winning research proposal. The grant facilitates the transition of these projects from theory to practice, provided that the winning projects commence implementation within two months after the announcement of the awardees. Middle East Solar Industry Association awards leading school ‘Solar Project of the Year’
Carport solar panels deliver 25% of the Al Jadaf IB Boarding school’s energy needs
System provided by Yellow Door Energy and Empereal Energy Services.
[Dubai, December 21, 2023] After installing a ground-breaking solar panel-based energy system on the roof of its car parking area, Swiss International School Dubai is the proud winner of ‘Solar Project of the Year’ at the Middle East Solar Industry Association annual awards.
The MESIA Solar Awards, held on December 6 th at the Address Hotel, Marina, is the industry’s longest standing, premier awards ceremony, now in its twelfth edition.
Chosen by an esteemed panel of expert judged, this year’s awards were very popular, being held during the UAE Year of Sustainability and the year Dubai hosts the COP28 talks.
Sustainability and environmental awareness are commonplace at the Al Jadaf-based school, from including sneakers made from recycled plastic on the uniform list, to encouraging pupils to consider waste in fashion with competitions like Junk Kouture.
The innovative solar power panels, installed at the school by local sustainable energy provider for businesses, Yellow Door Energy, during the summer break, will deliver enough power to meet around a quarter of the site’s energy needs.
Yellow Door Energy installed 1,366 solar panels atop the car port, covering 200 parking spots at the school.School Head of Operations, Alexander Varghese, says: “We would like to thank the
Middle East Solar Association and Yellow Door Energy for delivering us a truly sustainable energy solution, which has now given us more silver for our growing trophy cabinet!
“Our mission to create fully-rounded 21 st century global citizens must include high awareness of sustainability in mind. We believe that seeing the solar panels in action – and understanding that they help provide a significant level of power to our school complex- will help pupils keep renewable energy sources front of mind as they step out in the world.”
Mr Varghese also highlighted the school’s many environmental initiatives, from saving water initiatives to an eco-friendly mud garden.
CEO of Yellow Door Energy, Jeremy Crane, commented “Sustainability and education go hand in hand, and we are honored to be recognised for this award – for the solar carport power plant for Swiss International Scientific School Dubai. As a UAE-founded company, Yellow Door Energy continues to strongly support the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 Target and COP28’s objectives. We look forward to operating and maintaining the solar carport, with the intention that it will inspire the students, teachers and staff at the school for many years to come.”
Yellow Door Energy has provided SISD with a clean energy solution, which will have a remarkable, long-term effect on the entire school community. The winning installation measures around 3,000 square meters – larger than three tennis courts – and will generate around 1,300MWh of clean energy each year, offsetting 920 metric tonnes of carbon emissions.
Yellow Door Energy expects the system to generate 30,680 MWh of clean energy over its expected lifetime of 25 years, avoiding 21,700 metric tons of carbon emissions.[ends]

IN COLLABORATION WITH A GROUP OF STRATEGIC PARTNERS

TADWEER LAUNCHES INTEGRATED SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE TEXTILE CIRCULARITY IN THE UAE AT COP28

    • The first-of-its-kind initiative aims to raise awareness for textile recycling, leveraging cross-sector resources and relationships to advance sustainable means of collection and reuse.
    • The initiative was created in collaboration with stakeholders from various sectors including with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), Emirates Red Crescent, Emirates Foundation, Landmark Group, Lulu and SOEX.
    • The launch event included a panel discussion and a pledging ceremony with strategic enablers in the textile waste ecosystem, including government authorities and private players.

Dubai(Press Release):: Tadweer (Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company) today announced an ‘Integrated Textile Circularity Initiative’ to be established across the UAE, designed to increase consumer awareness and foster collective efforts among public-private partners throughout the entire value chain.

The first-of-its-kind initiative was announced during COP28 which saw several leading UAE entities participate in an impactful panel at the UAE Actionist Hub Pavilion within the Green Zone. The partners convened to address the issue of textile waste and present a solution to achieving textile circularity in the UAE.

The panel gathered strategic enablers alongside Tadweer from the textile ecosystem with speakers from entities including Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), Emirates Foundation, Landmark Group, Lulu, SOEX. The representatives engaged in meaningful dialogue focused on the opportunities and challenges surrounding the practical implementation and transition to textile circularity.

To foster multidisciplinary collaboration, Tadweer followed the panel with an invitation for panellists and stakeholders to pledge their commitment to advancing textile circularity.

Commenting on the launch of the initiative and the success of the event, Eng. Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO, Tadweer, said: “Textile circularity plays a significant role in the UAE’s ambitious environmental and sustainability goals, and is an opportunity for partners in the public and private sectors to shift the approach to collection and recycling.”

“By convening at COP28 and committing to this pledge, we are creating a blueprint for the development of dedicated community development programmes that educate, support, and lead businesses and consumers to recycle materials. This initiative also supports our efforts to promote the wider circular economy for a sustainable future.” Al Dhaheri added.

H.E Ahmed Al Shamsi, CEO, Emirates Foundation said: “The Year of Sustainability and the hosting of COP28 in the UAE present a unique opportunity to accelerate our textile circularity initiatives. Through enhancing consumer awareness, building effective collection systems, and fostering recycling innovations, we are contributing significantly to the global dialogue on sustainable practices in the textile industry.”

The UAE’s textile consumption is currently at around 500 million pieces annually, of which around 210,000 tonnes end up as discarded materials. Up to 90% of discarded textiles are currently ending up in landfills, which then release methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. In order to reduce the impact of textiles on the environment, Tadweer stressed the importance of undertaking programs to scale the organized collection of used textiles.

The initiative also addressed this vast area of opportunity with a variety of programs to target four pillars such as community awareness development, textile collection and recycling, enabling ecosystem participation, and national policy development. Through these pillars, the initiative aims to organize and expand the collection and recycling of used textiles throughout the UAE, establishing a comprehensive infrastructure to support with disposal efforts and encourage more sustainable consumption patterns among businesses and consumers at a grassroots level.Leading entities in attendance comprised government authorities, ministries, charities, hotel chains, hospitals, and more, including representatives from the Emirates Red Crescent, Aldar Properties, M42 Healthcare, Abu Dhabi National Hotels, Kiswa, Behavioral Science Group, Majid Al Futtaim, Erth, Reloop, Fabric AID, Nadeera, Recapp, Washmen.(ENDS)

  • BOARDING AT SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL DUBAI GROWS BY NEARLY 100%

BOARDING AT SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL DUBAI GROWS BY NEARLY 100%

BOARDING AT SWISS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL DUBAI GROWS BY NEARLY 100%

Top UAE school – one of the only boarding schools in the Middle East – sees
record growth in number of boarders

[Dubai, September 27, 2023] Swiss International School Dubai (SISD), a unique IB,bilingual boarding school based in the heart of Dubai, has seen the number of boarders attending the Al Jadaf site rise by nearly 100% this academic year. Some 20% of the boarding cohort of pupils are weekly boarders, spending weekends at home. One of Dubai’s youngest schools, recently ranked as one of the world’s top 100
schools, SISD has seen a significant growth and level of interest this year in boarding – of nearly 100% growth year-on-year — and still growing.
There are several reasons why boarding has increased in popularity – but the main attractions include the school’s world-class facilities, teaching excellence and the rich, multilingual repertoire of both academic and pastoral care provided on site.
On top of this, part of the increase is reflected in the city’s rapid population growth –which rose by some 86,607 people between June 2022 and June 2023, hitting a population figure of 3,597,829 citizens.
Dubai is renowned for being a safe city in which to board, and is considered a dynamic place with lots to do. And as a multinational city, Dubai is attracting new residents who are interested in this type of destination for their children.
Principal Ruth Burke says: “UK and European boarding schools are often perceived as old fashioned and very traditional in their approach to boarding. SISD is not like that. We believe we are setting a new standard in what 21 st century boarding looks like.”
Boarding students with a passion for sports can enjoy the world-class facilities and training sessions — including a Speedo Swimming Club and an Athletics Club –before and after school easier, without having to rely on early mornings and mum’s taxi.

Parents are relived of the burden of driving the kids to and from school early in the morning and later in the evening, after normal school hours. And with more time for sleep, and less stress in the logistics of taking part in extras- curricular clubs, SISD sports students and teams tend to excel. Students live in purpose-built boarding houses on campus, with either individual or shared bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. They have access to a full academic and pastoral care team living on site to support their needs.
There are pantries on each floor of each boarding house, and students are permitted to make their own snacks and drinks. Older students have access to a cooker and a washing machine to help develop these very important life skills.

Ashley Fitzgibbons, head of boarding, says: “Boarding in the UAE is fast setting the tone for boarding schools worldwide. Refreshingly different, modern, sporty and well-supported – that’s how our students and families describe boarding at SISD. “It’s a fantastic option for both students and parents, and is well-suited for parents  who live in Asia, other GCC countries, or who want to send their children to a safe
and exciting city for their boarding experience. “Our weekly boarding families are also increasing, as families find this a convenient way of allowing their children to focus more on sports and academic studies, and supports busy working parents. “Boarding is also a great way of students having some independence, and preparing them for life at university, away from home.” The school’s Al Jadaf location provides easy access to Dubai international Airport, the world’s largest airport hub, and let’s not forget that Dubai always ranks among the world’s safest cities.
Ashley continues: “Boarding is ideal for parents who travel to Dubai and/or the Middle East a lot, live in GCC countries, or who have commercial business interests in Dubai. We are also offering a new boarding skills life programme – preparing students for life after school.”
At the heart of the school’s boarding philosophy is a desire to always maintain the student/parent relationship, with parents encouraged to visit the students, and to take them out at the weekends if they are in Dubai. From a pastoral perspective, every student has their own specific boarding tutor who
is responsible for their general welfare, happiness, mental health and wellbeing. Dedicated boarding counselling sessions are offered in three different languages. There is also a dedicated boarding nurse who attends to students’ medical needs. Boarding activities don’t end at the weekend, either, with a host of local weekend trips – chosen by the students themselves – including the likes of the ICCA culinary institute, the Emirati Centre for Cultural Understanding, Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, and of course, the beaches and malls. After homework, extra-curricular activities and dinner, evenings are filled with laughter and social activity, as students enjoy movie nights, barbecues and quiz nights. Student voice and agency is key, with boarding student leaders and ambassadors playing a significant leadership role, not only within the boarding house, but also within the school environment. They have the opportunity to support new and
prospective families with school tours, plan house activities, shape boarding house rules and share their own experiences in the boarding school with other students. They also provide significant input into menus, trips and the general running of the houses.SISD is ranked as one of the Top 100 schools in the world by the Spears Index andCarfax Education.
