The British Veterinary Center in Abu Dhabi has achieved a historic achievement by being the first facility in the Middle East and North Africa region to perform mitral valve repair surgeries for pets.

AbuDhabi (News Desk)::The British Veterinary Center in Abu Dhabi recorded an unprecedented veterinary medical achievement in the Middle East and North Africa region, by successfully performing the first mitral valve repair operation during the spring of 2024. This complex medical achievement, conducted by a distinguished veterinary medical team using the latest devices and technologies, is a huge step in The field of pet cardiac care in the United Arab Emirates and the surrounding region.

Mitral valve disease is the most common heart disease in pets worldwide. Although traditional treatments can slow the deterioration of health conditions, they do not eliminate the risk of heart failure completely. Given that successful valve repair surgery eliminates the need for long-term drug treatment and allows animals a completely normal life, the British Veterinary Center in Abu Dhabi took the initiative in performing mitral valve repair surgeries, in an effort to provide a radical solution to this incurable disease.

Under the leadership of distinguished international experts, led by Professor Katsuhiro Matsuura, who holds a doctorate in veterinary medicine, and assistant professor of open-heart surgery in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences ( SACS ), at the University of Florida, USA, and also Dr. Jose Botti, Senior veterinarian and cardiologist at the British Veterinary Center in Abu Dhabi, where the 7-member surgical team successfully performed a series of complex operations on three critical cases that required urgent valve repair. It is worth noting that one of the cases was not expected to live more than one month without surgical intervention.

The three cases underwent a careful approach to preparation and preparation for surgery, and the medical team used the cardiopulmonary resuscitation technique in all operations, which allows the heart to be temporarily and safely stopped to allow the valve repair operation to be performed accurately and effectively.The surgeries were completed successfully, and intensive post-operative care was provided, resulting in excellent results for all cases, and they are expected to enjoy a normal life without the need for medications.

Dr. Martin Wiens, senior veterinarian and founder of the British Veterinary Centre, commented on this historic achievement, saying: “We are very proud to present this successful procedure to the Middle East and North Africa region.
