UAEREP, Explores New Research Collaboration Opportunities in the United States

The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) Explores New Research Collaboration Opportunities in the United States

Abu Dhabi(News Desk)::  The UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP) has concluded its Roadshow in the United States. With an agenda focused on exploring new opportunities for innovative research collaboration in the fields of weather enhancement through rain enhancement technologies, the roadshow also officially launched the research project awarded recipient of the 5th UAEREP grant cycle, led by Professor Will Cantrell from Michigan Technological University (MTU), USA.

The roadshow included visits to key research centers specializing in advanced technology and water sustainability in the states of Michigan and New York. These centers included Michigan Technological University (MTU) and its Great Lakes Research Center, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Thomas J. Watson Research Center at IBM, Columbia University, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and The City College of New York.

This tour took place as the program began preparations to announce the start of its new grants cycle due to start in January 2025. The new cycle will focus on five principal areas: enhanced seeding materials, rain enhancement systems, autonomous aerial systems, localized climate intervention, and advanced models, software, and data. Additionally, it will also explore opportunities to build on the outputs of the 14 research projects that received program grants in previous years.

The roadshow also included the participation of the program’s delegation in the “United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development,” organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs at its headquarters in New York. This participation allowed the UAEREP team to learn about the latest global trends related to the SDGs, especially SDG 6 and SDG 13, enabling the program to continue supporting water sustainability goals through innovative new rain enhancement technologies as a sustainable water source.

The roadshow also strengthened cooperation with key stakeholders, leading scientists, and experts in weather modification and rain enhancement research in both Michigan and New York. The program exchange expertise with key researchers and scientists in water security and environmental sustainability from  all the eminent institutions visited by the roadshow.

His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), said: “In line with the UAE’s commitment to supporting ground-breaking research initiatives and building international partnerships to seek effective solutions to address water scarcity challenges and improve weather worldwide, we commit to explore new collaboration opportunities with some of the world’s leading environmental and water sustainability research institutions, stakeholders, researchers, scientists, and policymakers.”

Alya Al Mazroui, Director of UAEREP, said: “Our first stop on this tour focused on launching the innovative research project by Professor Will Cantrell and his team at MTU, award recipients of the 5th UAEREP grant cycle. Their project utilizes laboratory studies and modeling to determine the suitability of clouds for hygroscopic seeding. We very much look forward to further collaboration with Professor Cantrell through the unique expertise and research infrastructure provided by the national center in the field of rain enhancement research.”

The research project led by Professor Cantrell, entitled “Laboratory and Modeling Studies of Cloud Susceptibility to Hygroscopic Seeding”, aims to identify those clouds that can be effectively modified through hygroscopic seeding or electrical charging for enhanced precipitation. The project’s experimental approach relies on a unique cloud chamber at MTU, which can create and sustain steady cloud conditions over extended periods to enable the collection of high-resolution data on cloud properties. By conducting studies on highly polluted clouds, the research team hopes to gain valuable insights into identifying suitable clouds for seeding and determining the amount of seeding materials and charging required for successful rain enhancement operations.

Professor Cantrell, Associate Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School at Michigan Technological University, and recipient of the UAEREP 5th cycle grant, said: “My team and I are thrilled to share the details of our ambitious project with the program team on the ground. We are confident that this research project will make a significant contribution alongside the other research projects that have received program grants in previous cycles.”

The research team led by Professor Cantrell includes key researchers from international institutions, including the University of Utah, Mesa Photonics Laboratory, and Weather Modification International. The project aligns with the program’s vision of supporting initiatives that foster capacity building initiatives within the research community, ensuring sustained progress and knowledge exchange in the field of rain enhancement science.– Ends –

UAE launches global initiative to build 10 hospitals

to address critical healthcare gaps as part of Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative

    • With a financial investment reaching almost USD 150 million (AED 550 million) over the next decade, the UAE will fund the construction of up to 10 hospitals, each designed to meet specific healthcare needs of the benefiting communities

    • The 135-bed UAE-Indonesia Hospital for Cardiac Diseases in Surakarta, Indonesia will be the first hospital established as part of the program

Abu Dhabi(News Desk):: The United Arab Emirates has unveiled an ambitious program aimed at bridging critical healthcare gaps worldwide as part of the Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative, announced in March of this year by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With a substantial financial investment of approximately USD 150 million (AED 550 million) over the next decade, the UAE Global Hospitals Program will oversee the construction of up to 10 hospitals, each tailored to meet the specific healthcare needs of underserved communities, enhancing the health of those least likely to access medical care.
The UAE-Indonesia Hospital for Cardiac Diseases, currently under construction in Surakarta, Central Java, will be the first facility to be inaugurated. Expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2024, the launch of this hospital will mark a significant milestone in the UAE Global Hospitals Program overseen by the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, providing vital services to thousands of heart disease patients.
The program reflects the UAE’s long-standing commitment to global health equity and international cooperation. It represents a significant investment in supporting global health under the Zayed Humanitarian Legacy Initiative, which will support institutions and projects working to deliver aid, address inequality, and advance sustainable development solutions.
His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chair of the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, said: “Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, we are honoured to reinforce our dedication to the UAE’s enduring mission of improving global health. Over the coming decade, this initiative will drive meaningful change, embodying our commitment to assisting the underserved and enhancing the wellbeing and dignity of communities worldwide.”
His Excellency Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State and Chair of the International Health Advisory Committee at the International Humanitarian and Philanthropic Council, said: “The hospitals established through this initiative will bolster healthcare systems, equipping them to bridge crucial health access gaps effectively. The UAE-Indonesia Hospital for Cardiac Diseases will not only deliver specialized medical services but also stand as a model for future projects within this program.”
Heart diseases are a leading cause of death and disability in Indonesia, with ischemic heart disease and stroke particularly prevalent. The burden of these diseases has risen significantly due to lifestyle changes, urbanization, and an aging population. Despite the expansion of healthcare coverage through national insurance programs, the healthcare system struggles to effectively manage the rising incidence of heart diseases. Furthermore, access to healthcare facilities remains uneven, particularly in rural and remote areas in Indonesia. While there are some healthcare facilities available in Surakarta, overall access to specialized and high-quality healthcare services is limited compared to larger urban centres. With this new facility, the program aims to improve specialized healthcare access and alleviate the overall disease burden.
Continuing the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s inspiring vision and generosity, the UAE is considered one of the world’s most generous donor countries. Latest figures show the UAE has contributed over USD 87 billion (AED 320 billion) in foreign assistance since the country’s founding. This commitment to global philanthropy is deeply rooted in the UAE’s history and values, reflecting the nation’s dedication to fostering international cooperation and solidarity.
About the UAE-Indonesia Hospital for Cardiac Disease
Located in Surakarta, Central Java, the UAE-Indonesia Hospital for Cardiac Diseases is a pioneering international healthcare project between the UAE and Indonesia. The hospital includes 135 beds and features comprehensive facilities, including outpatient and inpatient services with specialized treatment rooms and a modern emergency department. This new facility is expected to set new standards in cardiac care, significantly improving treatment outcomes for cardiac patients in Indonesia. The hospital integrates advanced medical technologies and sustainable building practices, such as locally sourced materials, rainwater harvesting, ecological integration, and an on-campus clean solar energy plant, aligning with both nations’ commitment to environmental sustainability.

This collaboration focused on advancing solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects in SIDS, driving innovation, creating employment opportunities, promoting gender equality, and strengthening climate resilience.
Legacy of sustainable development In his acceptance speech, His Excellency Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, highlighted the UAE’s legacy of sustainable development instituted by the UAE’s founding president, the late Sheikh Zayed, and
carried forward by our wise leadership through numerous strategic vision and prudent policies, accelerating the energy transition and economic transformation of the SIDS.
H.E. Al Suwaidi said: “Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, ADFD is committed to supporting the UAE’s mission to minimize the effects of climate change through the promotion of clean energy in Small Island Developing States and globally.”
He added: “International cooperation is central to our mission to achieve global energy and sustainable development goals, and we are grateful to all contributors for the recognition we have achieved in this field. We reaffirm our commitment to support the island states on their journey towards a sustainable and resilient energy future.”
    Major projects
One of the major projects financed by ADFD includes the US$5.4 million wind farm in Samoa. The bespoke, one-of-its-kind farm boasts cyclone-proof turbines, delivering uninterrupted energy to 75 percent of the country’s population. The project notably saves 183,000 liters of diesel each year, thus helping the country reduce its carbon footprint by 506 tons.
Likewise, the hurricane-resistant hybrid power plant in Antigua and Barbuda is designed to withstand the fiercest winds, providing a reliable and sustainable supply of electricity for the entire population on the island, and supporting the nation’s goal to produce 86 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2030. The plant also enables the country to reduce annual diesel consumption by 406,000 liters and cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1 million kilograms.
The 600 kW solar power plant in the Marshall Islands built on a reservoir near the capital Majuro increases the water storage capacity of the artificial lake by over 20
percent. The project saves 236,000 liters of diesel annually and reduces annual CO2
    emissions by 652 tons.
Similar renewable energy projects in Nauru, Solomon Island, Micronesia, Nauru,Kiribati, Fiji, Tuvalu, and Tonga have brought equal environmental and economic benefits.
