    Dubai( Bandana Jain):In an exclusive interview at Arabian Travel Market with Cluster General Manager, The8 Collection, Mohamed Elakkad opens up on how they look forward to an exciting summer period and how the resort activities are a major draw for the guests.

    How do you propose to handle the upcoming summer season? Do you have any definite strategies in place to increase sales during that period?
    We have staycations for summers which we are trying to promote across UAE markets.Starting at AED 888, the staycation offers half board to the guests and wonderful value for money for weekenders and families, which opt to choose Dubai as destination. We are trying to maximize the marketing and promotion of that package to attract guests at the hotel during summer season. After the transition to IHG brand and Vignette Collection brand, we hope, to do high occupancy in summer. We are optimistic and we will be trying to increase our sales and marketing efforts in order to attract customers coming from important markets to Dubai.

    How do you propose to handle the stiff competition with other hotels on the Palm?
    The Hotel has been running through a transition into a new brand by IHG called Vignette Collection. This brand is unique and is meant to be a, luxury lifestyle brand. So we’d like to differentiate ourselves by promoting the lifestyle aspect and by offering personalized service yet in a very modern atmosphere and as well, vibes.
    We have created and developed lots of activities which aim at accommodating that aspect.We have partnered with Baby Sensory to provide classes at our resort. We are partnering with Blue Safari Water Sports to facilitate water sports across the beach. We have partnered with freelancers to provide yoga classes. We also partnered with some vendors to provide live painting experience across the hotel areas. In addition to that, we are adopting the brand Rituals and one of them is offering moongazing experience. We offer to the guests the experience to do moon gazing through one of our telescopes, which we bought recently for that purpose.
    We would like to promote ourselves as a special boutique luxury resort that offers to the guests a luxury lifestyle experience in Palm Jumeirah with one of the greatest views of the sea at The Palm West Crescent.
    How would you like to comment upon the Q1 sales and how do you expect the Q2 to go on?
    Our quarter one was great. We managed to grow our occupancy five points versus two points in our primary Palm set. We managed as well to grow our average room rate five points versus last year and our RevPar growth was 13 points versus last year. Hence, we had good records of improvement and growth in occupancy and average room rate. Our food and beverage as well did great especially the latest Ramadan iftars where we hosted between 86 guests to 100 guests daily in our all-day dining. We have done a lot of activations like romantic dinners and we receive everyday guests on the beach and have a uniquedining experience on the beach and there’s more to come. We recently activated the SundayRoast in addition to our Saturday Brunch, which is very busy now.
    What is your outlook on the sales in terms of UAE market in particular and GCC in general?
    Well, the outlook is quite positive. The market is growing but the competition is increasing,and as I mentioned, our aim is to create strong awareness for the hotel after the transition to the IHG brand and Vignette Collection brand being a family friendly resort. We aim at creating strong awareness in key source markets like UK and Germany. We’ve been recently in ITV Berlin for that purpose in GCC we went with IHG road show to the GCC countries recently to increase the awareness and we plan as well to do more trips to GCC to create awareness and to increase sales from GCC markets this is very important, but the outlook is
    positive and we hope to see improving sales results, in quarter two and full year 2024.
    How are things at the ATM? What do you propose to get the best out of this ATM this time?
    It’s a great opportunity to meet partners and key tour operators at ATM and to update them with our summer promotions. It's also an opportunity to thank them for the support shown in the first quarter and most importantly to discuss initiatives in order to develop our market share and a share of wallet from key source markets like Germany and the UK.

    Abu Dhabi(News Desk):: The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi has commissioned the world premiere of PETTEE: storybox, a groundbreaking performance, written and directed by acclaimed writers Deepak Unnikrishnan and Karthika Naïr. The performance, presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 18-19, at 7:15pm in The Red Theater, starting in The East Plaza.

    PETTEE: storybox blurs the lines between stage and audience, open air and theater.

    In languages that are home to hundreds of millions of people (Malayalam, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi)  PETTEE embodies words such as casket, crate, and suitcase. But the meaning that almost everyone recognizes instantly is container – containers we carry, containers that contain us.

    The word is a spirit animal for human beings with rootlessness and displacement in their blood, those dreaming of possibilities. Writers Deepak Unnikrishnan and Karthika Naïr invited a host of artists from various horizons in their attempt to give those dreams shape and song.Joining them in making PETTEE are composer Sarathy Korwar with his musicians, set and lighting designer Willy Cessa, illustrator Appupen (George Mathen), and rigger-prop maker Simon Nyiringabo, along with virtuosic choreographers/performers Wanjuro Kamuyu, Saju Hari and Ali Ben Lotfi Thabet who weave a fresh movement language from the everyday word.

    Executive Artistic Director at The Arts Center at NYUAD Bill Bragin commented: “We were really inspired when Deepak Unnikrishnan approached us with the idea of creating his first dance piece. He’s one of the UAE’s leading literary figures, as well as NYU Abu Dhabi faculty, looking at issues of Gulf migration with a sharp eye and a mischievous and fantastical sensibility. His collaborator Karthika Nair recently taught at NYUAD and worked as a dramaturg on Mehek by Aakash Odedra & Aditi Mangaldas, which we presented in February. Together they have assembled an all-star transnational team of interdisciplinary collaborators that we are excited to see perform. Commissioning new work is always an adventure, and turning over The Red Theater for a month so they can develop the new work is a noticeable investment by NYU Abu Dhabi in creative development.”

    Associate Arts Professor at NYUAD, Deepak Unnikrishnan, added: “Text has dominated stories about bodies like mine in the Gulf. I wanted to look elsewhere. Intentionally, turned to a discipline that viewed the literal body as a punctuation mark, a sentence, a thought. But I needed help.  The choreographers of Pettee – Saju Hair, Wanjiru Kamuyu and Ali Thabet – come from movement disciplines as varied as the circus arts, martial arts and Broadway. Their knowledge has given the project a different set of vocabularies and registers to think about experiences not only relevant to the Gulf, but also elsewhere.

    I know what to do with the page. I am working with dancers and musicians who are helping me learn what to do with the stage.”French-Indian poet, playwright, fabulist, and dance scenarist, Karthika Nair, said: “I read Deepak Unnikrishnan’s novel Temporary People years before we met. Within a few chapters — perhaps even pages — I knew. Here was writing that danced off the page, writing that sang in multiple tongues, that detonated the frontiers of literary convention. Writing that felt like home.

    My world revolves around dance. And while I never expected Deepak to pick a performative piece as our intended collaboration, it feels somehow right, and inevitable. As right, and inevitable, as the process of making PETTEE with this particular team. Willy Cessa, Simon Nyiringabo, Sarathy Korwar, Appupen, the three choreographers — whose work I have been watching, entranced, for years… PETTEE is the experience it is, on and off stage, thanks to their exceptional talent, but also their giant hearts.”

    Audiences can expect an immersive journey into a world of movement, music, and flight, where bodies unbend, lunge, and soar to unseal and unpack years of youth. PETTEE: storybox promises to transport visitors into a realm where multiple futures, each magical, seem possible.

    On April 18, attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with the artists during a post-show Q&A session moderated by George Jose, Visiting Associate Professor of Anthropology at NYU Abu Dhabi.

    The launch of Wider Web for mobile follows the debut of Wider Web for desktop computer browsing. First introduced in 2021 in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development (MoCD), the groundbreaking solution revolutionised accessibility, empowering individuals on the autism spectrum to navigate the internet with ease and confidence. The free browser extension, which instantly transforms a standard web page into an autistic-friendly one, represents a project of collaborative design as it was developed with the help of local psychologists and widely tested by users with autism.

    As the first tool of its kind dedicated to users with autism, the extension offers a calmer browsing experience by blocking distracting pop-ups, disabling video auto-play, customising fonts, adjusting colours, and simplifying the interface of most websites. Building on the existing benefits, the newly released mobile extension also features an AI-powered summariser, an intuitive tool that condenses lengthy articles into clear, concise paragraphs, making information easier to digest.

    85% of autistic users choose to disable video autoplay

    Ongoing research conducted by the University of Birmingham Dubai and Dr. Shereen Sharaan, a Postdoctoral Researcher in Psychology, have backed Wider Web’s significance in enhancing the lives of autistic individuals. The study, which focused on 160 autistic adults from diverse ethnic backgrounds, found that 85 per cent of users with autism want to exercise more control over their digital experience by disabling video autoplay. This was closely followed by the personalised ‘colour schemes’ feature which lets users choose their preferred colour, either dark, medium, or light grey.

    Dr. Shereen Sharaan said: “The web can easily become overwhelming to people with autism. Thanks to e&, Wider Web simplifies the way some people experience the web by curating the user experience for people who are on the autism spectrum.”
