    Medcare expects to see a four-fold increase in breast cancer screenings in October

     Medcare expects to see a surge in breast cancer screenings during the month of October once again leading to a 4.6-fold increase in screenings in the last three years.
     Screening over 500 women in October 2023, the Medcare hospitals and medical centres are currently on track to screen over 700 women this October.

    Dubai(Urdu Weekly):: Medcare Hospitals Medical Centres has announced rolling out the third edition of its annual breast cancer screening and awareness program this October and is on track to screen over 700 women this year. The month-long campaign, running from October 1 to 31, is led by Medcare Women Children Hospital and will run across all of Medcare’s hospitals and medical centres.
    Offering a special screening package that includes a consultation with a specialist and the choice of an ultrasound or mammogram screening, Medcares mostly women-led facility, Medcare Women & Children Hospital, is encouraging mothers and women to prioritize their health. Medcare’s approach has always been about educating the public towards the prevention of illnesses and lifestyle improvements while making screenings affordable to the wider public.
    Commenting on the screening program, Internal Medicine Specialist and Medical Director of Medcare Women & Children Hospital and Medcare Medical Centers, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Hameed, said, “We are happy to announce the third edition of the breast cancer campaign, following the huge success of previous years’ programme that witnessed a threefold increase over the last two years. We are delighted to see that women are responding so well to our educational program and really taking ownership of their health.”
    “Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in UAE, however, it is also one of the most curable types of cancers if identified and treated in its early stages. We are all about empowering and enriching the lives of our patients through supporting them to make informed decisions about their health,” he added.
    “Early detection is critical in improving survival rates and treatment outcomes for breast cancer, and we are proud to empower women to take control of their health. The campaign aims to eliminate the hesitation women may feel towards breast cancer screening by offering convenient and affordable service, delivered by a team of highly qualified gynecologists, general surgeons, and breast health experts,” added Dr. Brian Mtemererwa, Consultant Endocrinologist and Medical Director at Medcare Royal Specialty Hospital Out of the 504 women screened last year, 10 per cent were found to have “suspicious” abnormalities that required further investigation as these abnormalities could either have been pre-cancerous or in actuality be malignant. Additionally, nearly 30 per cent of women screened,showed minor benign abnormalities, including clustered round calcifications and fibroadenomas.
    For women found with abnormalities, our specialists recommended biopsies and follow-up consultations with surgeons, ensuring that patients received the necessary care if needed. Many participants were advised to return for repeat screenings within six months to monitor their progression.

    Worldwide the age bracket of women being diagnosed with breast cancer has been dropping.
    For instance, one of the patients who came to Medcare Women & Children Hospital for her screening, Ms Jessica Abou Jaoude, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the prime of her life, being only 30 years old. Having no previous family history of breast cancer and living a healthy lifestyle, the news came as a complete shock to her.
    “Breast cancer can be detected at any age, even with no family, or personal history. Whether you are in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, or beyond, the risk is real. I was happily living life till one day I found a lump in my breast while self-evaluating. I was sure it was nothing to worry about but still decided to get myself screened anyway,” she said.
    “I received the shocking diagnosis and the rest is history. Had I waited and delayed my screening, I probably would not have made it. Through early detection and taking the right steps to investigate my small lump, I have saved my own life. I am happy to share my positive experience with Medcare as a breast cancer advocate, and encourage all women out there to get over the fear and have themselves evaluated. I now live a healthy and happy life with a long future ahead,” Ms Jessica remarked.

    Eye tumor larger than an eyeball in size, surgically removed to help Filipina expat regain vision at Medcare Hospital Sharjah

     This tumour, diagnosed only when the patient complained of vision loss and a feeling of heaviness around her right eye, was threatening the womans eyesight.

     Medically known as Cavernous Hemangioma, this benign tumor is located behind the eyeball and can pose significant risks, such as optic neuropathy and visual
    impairment, when situated in critical areas of the eye.

    Dubai(News Desk):: A routine eye examination prevented a 57-year-old Filipina resident of Sharjah from going blind for the rest of her life. The expat had been suffering from vision loss and heaviness around her right eye for almost a month when she went to see an ophthalmologist. Further, she was referred to Oculoplasty and Orbit Surgery specialist at Medcare Hospital Sharjah, who discovered a large tumor in the orbit of the eye, and recommended additional examination. A massive tumour measuring 35×30 mm, larger than the patients 24mm eyeball, was successfully removed at Medcare Hospital in Sharjah following a strenuous hour long complex surgical procedure.
    The astute ophthalmologist at Medcare Hospital Sharjah noticed that the patients right eye protruded more than the left during the eye checkup. The patient insisted that it was a slowly progressive protrusion that began to show since her childhood. Following the ophthalmologist’s timely prognosis, the patient got an MRI and CT scan done, where the medical team discovered a well-defined oval intraconal lesion in the right orbit, indicating the likelihood of a cavernous hemangioma (vascular tumour). The patient underwent a highly sophisticated micro invasive surgery, which is thought to be the first of its type in Medcare, to remove the tumour from behind her eye.
    Dr. Fairooz P.M., Oculoplastic Surgeon at Medcare Hospital Sharjah, who is also an Eye Cancer specialist leading the surgical team stated,This was a very risky case as it was compressing the optic nerve causing vision loss, and the surgical procedure involved protecting the optic nerve to regain the vision. This meticulous surgery, which required a high level of precision, was crucial in preventing further vision deterioration.Prior to the surgery, the tumour caused the eye to protrude forward and threatened her vision by squeezing the nerve at the back of the eye. It was a micro incision internal orbital surgical approach that was adopted, Dr. Fairooz stated According to Dr. Fairooz, the benign tumour measured 35x30mm, which was larger than the patients 24mm eyeball. Despite not spreading to other areas of the eye, the tumour continued to grow in size, abutting the optic nerve and compressing it, pushing it to the
    orbital walls, resulting in compressive optic neuropathy.

    ADFD celebrates women’s contributions and achievements on Emirati Women’s Day

    Abu Dhabi(News Desk):: Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) held a series of special events to celebrate Emirati Women’s Day, which takes place annually on August 28. The occasion was marked under the theme, “We Collaborate for Tomorrow”, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to equal participation in nation-building and a vision to develop a prosperous and sustainable future for communities worldwide through collaboration.
    His Excellency Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, highlighted the exceptional accomplishments of Emirati women, acknowledging their incredible progress in all areas. “The remarkable achievements of Emirati women in every field are a testament to the vision and support of our leadership, and the commitment of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF), the Mother of the Nation, to women’s
    empowerment. Their growing presence in leadership positions, both at the local and international levels, can be attributed to their hard work, commitment, and determination,” he said. He pointed out that Emirati women were crucial partners in the UAE’s all-round prosperity. “As we advance, we are committed to empowering them further,knowing that the future of our nation will be built on the foundation of their
    leadership, innovation, and commitment,” he added.
    The celebration featured various activities centered on Emirati women. One of these activities was a panel discussion featuring Her Excellency Naama Abdullah Al Sharhan, a Member of the Federal National Council. Titled “The Role and Status of Emirati Women”, the session explored women’s key contributions to the
    nation’s advancement under the patronage of the UAE’s leadership and Her

    Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union and Mother of the Nation. Her Excellency Al Sharhan emphasized how the support of Sheikh Zayed and Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak empowered Emirati women, enabling them to achieve equal opportunities and contribute
    meaningfully to nation-building.
    Adding to the festive atmosphere were the special marketplace and the enthusiastic participation of the children of ADFD employees. The marketplace showcased a wide variety of products, adding a delightful sparkle to the celebrations. This initiative aimed to highlight national talent, promote entrepreneurship, and support the growth of small businesses, thus contributing to the economic development of the UAE.
